About our region Somerset is situated on the mouth of the Cam River on the North West coast of Tasmania. Somerset is part of the Waratah /Wynyard municipality. Somerset and Wynyard are the main residential and service towns for the area. The district contains a diversity of landscapes from coastal, through farmland to hinterland rainforest.
About our community Somerset has the choice of two primary schools and easy access to other primary and high schools at nearby Burnie. A good range of secondary and further education opportunities are also available in Burnie. There is a variety of retail outlets, coffee shops and restaurants available in Somerset and nearby townships.
About our regional climate The area offers a cool temperate maritime climate.
About our lifestyle Living and working in the Waratah-Wynyard area offers many advantages not available in major population centres of mainland Australia. The area offers the lifestyle for which Tasmania is famous; a temperate climate, clean air, water and food. There is plenty of opportunity to participate in sport or recreational, artistic or cultural activities in the area. A drive around Table Cape in September/October will reveal hectares of tulips in flower. November is the month to visit Rocky Cape for a native orchid display, while in December the apiarists take their bees south to the leatherwood flowers. The walking tracks along the banks of the Inglis River provide hours of enjoyable walking, while further inland walking trails are to be found in the Hellyer Gorge and Waratah. There are plenty of opportunities for safe beach swimming in the area, including Sisters Beach, Somerset, East Wynyard and Boat Harbour Beach.
