About our local GP Division GP North is the GP Division supporting practices in our region.
About our region
Scottsdale has a population of around 2,000 and is part of the Dorset municipality in the far North-East of Tasmania.
Agriculture and forestry are the major industries and the Municipality is further sustained by light and service industries as well as commercial and residential development. Tourism plays an important role in the community. The region enjoys a lower level of unemployment than most other parts of the State.
Industries in the area include ship building at Bridport, the Defence Nutrition Research Centre and various timber and sawmilling enterprises.
Mining was a significant industry for the region in the early part of the century. Gold and tin were the main minerals mined and these operations saw a large influx of Chinese immigrants move into the far north east to work in the mines. The pioneers of yesteryear were very innovative, building substantial water races and private power stations.
About our community
The region is well service by a range of community services. Sports and recreation facilities are available in most towns in the region, offering a range of sports including golf, tennis, basketball, swimming, netball, football, cricket, hockey and squash. There is an active pony club at Scottsdale while water sports such as fishing, skiing and yachting are abundantly catered for.
Primary and Secondary schooling to year 10 is offered at Scottsdale. A daily bus service operates to Launceston from Bridport and Scottsdale for students to attend the various Launceston Colleges.
University courses are offered at the Launceston campus of the University of Tasmania.
About our regional environment
Residents of Dorset enjoy a superb natural environment with clean air and beautiful scenery, ranging from coastal beaches to patchwork farmlands and temperate rain forests on the surrounding hills and mountains. There are two main river catchments, these being the Brid/Forester and Ringarooma Rivers and within these catchments there are significant areas of fertile, volcanic soil.
About our lifestyle
The seaside village of Bridport situated on the beautiful shores of Anderson Bay, provides safe swimming and boating. Walking tracks, rock pools, boating facilities, caravan and camping park and many sporting clubs make Bridport a very attractive spot. Travel through the beautiful Ringarooma Valley and up to Tasmania's highest waterfall, through lush green valleys and into Tasmania's mining history. Mt William National Park provides an excellent example of a protected coastal environment.
