About Campbell Town With a population of 900 and located 67 km south of Launceston and 132 km north of Hobart on the Midland Highway, Campbell Town is one of those extraordinary historic towns which make the journey between Tasmania's two largest cities such a special experience. This remarkably beautiful town, with its wealth of early nineteenth century buildings, its ducks on the banks of the Elizabeth River, and its warm red bricks, is more reminiscent of an English village than a small Australian town.
Campbell Town came into existence in 1821 as one of a number of garrison towns linking Hobart and Launceston. It was, and is, the centre of the sheep-farming region of Tasmania. Campbell Town's Saxon merino sheep were introduced over 150 years ago, but the historic Winton estate even pre-dates that.
There is an impressive collection of colonial buildings such as The Grange (the local wealthy doctors house built in the late 1840s), the Foxhunters Return (1834), St Lukes Church (1939) and the Red Bridge (1836).
Campbell Town was the birthplace of Harold Gatty, the navigator on Wylie Post's first-ever round-the-world airplane flight, and the Gatty Memorial recalls this feat.
Other historic markers include the Campbell Town railway station, site of the first telephone call in the southern hemisphere, and the showgrounds, which are part of ongoing history - the Midland Show is the oldest continuous one in Australia.
