About Beaconsfield:
Beaconsfield (pop ~1400) is an old gold mining town 40 minutes drive northwest of Launceston. Gold mining began in 1877, and reached its pinnacle when the Tasmanian Gold Mine, the largest in the state, operated in Beaconsfield from 1904. 26 tonnes of gold were mined, but that seam closed ten years later due to water seepage. Relics from the gold era, and ruins from the period, remain the major drawcards. Beaconsfield was originally known as Brandy Creek. There is no local accommodation at this stage.

A must see attraction is the Grubb Shaft Gold & Heritage Museum. Open 9.30am - 4.30pm daily (except Good Friday and Christmas Day), this has the mine ruins, rebuilt/restored buildings including a miner's cottage, and the Old Flowery Gully School. There are over 30 visitor activated working models which include an 1872 iron smelter and steam machinery.

Attractions include Van Dieman's Land Gallery and craft shop and Gem and Stone Creations. Facilities include supermarkets, hardware store, fuel, hairdresser, chemist, bakeries and three pubs to savour the local atmosphere. The Beaconsfield District School has 300 students enrolled and transport to Launceston is provided regularly by a local bus operator.

At Sidmouth (just south of Beaconsfield), is Auld Kirk, a freestone church built in 1843. Also there, the cable-stayed Batman Bridge crosses the Tamar River, its 100m (300 ft.) tower making a great sight. Kayena is just a short drive north, with Holm Oak Vineyard and Tamar Ridge wines just around the corner. The Dazzler Range extends to the west of Beaconsfield. This incorporates the Holwell Gorge State Reserve - a narrow gorge and fern glade. The 3 hour walk passes three beautiful waterfalls.

About our region

The mild climate has resulted with vineyards and olive groves forming part of the landscape. Beauty Point is the home of the Australian Maritime College and a number of tourism attractions and offers residents berthing facilities for yachts. Greens Beach is the popular summer time retreat for many of the southern suburban populations.

About our economy
Aside from gold mining, forestry, tourism and agriculture provide the mainstays to the local economy while many residents also commute to the industrial precinct across the river at Bell Bay. Each small town is properly serviced by lifes essentials by varying degrees such as a post office, supermarket, some banks, hairdressers, chemists etc. Residents choose to shop locally mainly and travel to the well serviced city of Launceston occasionally.

Tasmania's economy has been incredibly stable and has experienced positive growth over the last six or seven years including a real estate boom which has assisted development throughout the state.

Many of Tasmania's coastlines are reasonably untouched and under developed which has been the catalyst for tourism development.

About our lifestyle

It is certainly a slower pace of life which is appealing to young families who want to raise their children in a safe environment. Never far away though for the young at heart is the cosmopolitan city of Hobart (3 hours south) and similarly Launceston (40 minutes south) offer all the services a young adult could desire including excellent tertiary educational opportunities and many quality private schools.
