About the Region
Burnie is Tasmania's fourth largest city and busiest container port, a hub for road, rail and sea transport systems linking the North West and West Coasts of Tasmania to the rest of the world. It is also the business centre for many agricultural, manufacturing, forest and mining industries.

Burnie was established by the Van Diemen's Land Co. in 1827 as a port to serve its vast inland pastoral holdings and for the first 100 years of settlement its progress was less than spectacular. Burnie's early heritage was dominated by the towering rain forests that cloaked the land and more than a century later, by the pulp and paper mill that helped shape the city as it is today.

The first permanent settlers of Emu Bay (the town was renamed Burnie - after VDL Co. director William Burnie in the early 1840s) arrived from England in the vessel Caroline on February 2, 1828.

Spend time leafing through the pages of Burnie's history at the city's Pioneer Village Museum which has brought to life the trials, tribulations and trivialities from the pioneers to present day.

With sand and surf almost lapping at the door, Burnie's central business and shopping district provides a thoroughfare to the beachside boardwalk and to a 17-kilometre walking trail that skirts the city. In about the time it takes to enjoy a cappuccino you can be working it off along the beautiful pathways of Burnie Park through native rainforest to a dramatic waterfall.

Or (if you're lucky) you can catch a glimpse of platypus just a few minutes drive east of the city at Fernglade, a tranquil retreat for picnicking or simply meandering along the banks of the Emu River.

When you've worked up an appetite head up the hill to sample the region's famous cheeses at the Lactos Cheese Tasting Centre and take advantage of the local prices and vast array of Tasmanian specialty produce from pickles and native peppercorns to the best Tasmanian wines.

Continue south and you'll reach spectacular Annsleigh Gardens and Tea Rooms and the renowned Rhododendron Gardens - superb displays of more than 9,000 wild and hybrid rhododendrons in a natural 12-hectare amphitheatre.

About our regional climate
Burnie enjoys a temperate climate, generous rainfall and clean sea breezes.

About our lifestyle
A dramatic facelift of the City over the last five years has resulted with the emergence of a vibrant and inviting CBD. Coupled with the redevelopment of the Surf Club at the foreshore, residents can enjoy fine food, coffee or a wine right on Burnie's West Beach.

A fantastic range of retailers and services from small to large in a compact and central CBD offers residents plenty of variety and choice. Smaller shopping precincts are located at Upper Burnie and Wivenhoe.

Burnie also has a great sporting tradition, which is reflected in the dynamic events hosted by the city, including the Skilled Burnie Ten (Australia's premier 10km road race) and the New Years Day Sports Carnival, which has been attracting patrons for more than 100 years.

A full range of educational facilities exist in Burnie from pre-school right through to and including university. There are approximately nine public primary schools, a catholic primary school and a private Christian school. Two major public High Schools, a pre tertiary college, a Catholic Secondary College, TAFE, the Australian Technical College and the University of Tasmanias Cradle Coast Campus offer a number choices for new families to the city.
