About our region
George Town is situated at the mouth of the Tamar River and is 58 km from the city of Launceston. The township of George Town is the administrative centre and is the oldest settlement in the region.

George Town's economy relies heavily upon the industrial zone and deep water port of Bell Bay, just south of the town. George Town's economy is tied closely with the development of industry in the area, and many of the immigrants who came to Bell Bay from the mid-twentieth century have continued to call the municipality home, bringing up families in the district and contributing to the economic development of the area.
